BJP in Gujarat and Karnataka but Congress in Maharashtra

CNN-IBN-CDS poll has just announced opinion poll results of key states like Gujarat, Maharashtra and Karnataka. BJP is ahead in Gujarat and Karnataka while Congress-NCP alliance is much ahead in Maharashtra. BJP is banking on Modi in Gujarat while Party consolidated its position in Karnataka mainly due to weakness in the opposition. Surprise of the result is Congress-NCP strength in Maharashtra. Congress is strengthening its position among Dalits but losing hold among urban voters. BSP is expected to get just 2% votes in all the three states.     IBN opinion poll results:       Gujarat:   1. 47% of voters are in favour of BJP while 45% of voters are in favour of Congress party.   2. BSP will get only 2% of votes while others can get 6% of votes.   3. Congress will increase vote share among SC and STs – whose votes it lost in the last Assembly elections.   4. 72% of voters are satisfied with Narendra Modi’s performance.     Karnataka:   1. BJP strengthened its position and is now expected to get 39% of votes.   2. Congress can get only 35% of votes while JD (S) will get just 15% of votes mainly in Southern Karnataka.   3. There is a huge swing among Dalit and Urban voters towards BJP.   4. But many voters are not satisfied with Yediyurappa performance.   5. Lingayats are totally in favour of BJP.     Maharashtra:     1. Congress-NCP alliance is much ahead in Maharashtra and is expected to get 50% of votes.     2. BJ-ShivSena alliance is expected to get just 39% of votes.     3. Others may get just 9% of votes.     4. Dalits are strongly in favour of Congress-NCP.       … [Read more...]

Karnataka election results: BJP and JD (S) swept by-polls

BJP swept the Karnataka By-polls by winning 5 seats while JD (S) won 3 assembly seats. Congress failed to win even a single seat in the  by-elections. BJP now has absolute strength (115 members) in the 224-member Assembly. The by-polls were held after 3 Congress and 4 JD(S) MLAs resigned from the assembly to join the BJP. This is a huge blow to Congress Party despite having cadre strength in at least 5 constituencies. Effective strength of BJP is now at 121 (6 independent MLAs are supporting BJP).         By-elections for 8 Karnataka by-elections were held on December 27th in a tense atmosphere (stability Vs defectors). But BJP comfortably won the majority number of seats to regain absolute majority in the Assembly. Voters voted for “defectors” mean they want stable Government. BJP should utilise this chance to gain strength in this South Indian state. Caste, Money and liquor played significant role in the outcome of by-polls.     Congress- self goals:     1. Lack of coordination in the Congress camp helped BJP and JD (S) to clean sweep the Assembly by-elections.     2. Congress released candidate list in the last minute.     3. Lingayats are now with BJP while Vokkaligas are with JD (S). Congress fails to plan a new strategy despite knowing this hard fact. Congress needs to do caste re-engineering to make progress in Karnataka vote bank politics.     Surprise: Kumaraswamy and his wife are the first couple in the Karnataka Assembly.     Bad news: M.D. Lakshminarayan, the BJP candidate in Turuvekere, suffered a heart attack after hearing his defeat news. He collapsed in the counting centre. He was ahead of his rival JD (S) candidate till the final round of counting. … [Read more...]
