Port Blair is the only municipality in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Port Blair city became municipality in 1957 with nine wards. Now, Port Blair is a B grade municipal town with 18 wards spread over 18 sq.kms. Congress and BJP are the major political parties while RJD, DMK, TMC and TDP have significant presence in the city.
First municipal elections in Portblair were held in 1958.
