Gulbarga City Corporation was constituted in 1981. Gulbarga city council has 55 wards and is a Congress party bastion. Gulbarga North favours Congress party due to strong muslim population while Gulbarga South is a BJP stronghold.
Gulbarga was the capital city of Bahamani Sultans and later ruled by Nizams of Hyderabad. It was merged with India in 1948. Gulbarga region was added to the Karnataka state while Hyderabad region and Nanded regions of Nizam’s state was added to the Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra respectively.
