Ahmedabad (Amdavad) derived its name from “The City of Ahmed” (Sultan Ahmed Shah). This city became municipality in 1858 and attracted the attention of nation in 1915 when Mahatma Gandhi setup Sabarmati Ashram. Ahmedabad was the state capital of Gujarat from 1960-70.
